We are just getting ready to get chicks. When our kids were young they had heritage breed poultry that they showed in 4-H. Now that they have their own kids they have been wanting "us" to get them again.  We were happy to oblige, but we may have forgotten a lot.
We ordered mostly brown leghorns, looking for a breed that was not sitting ducks for the predators and some black star. Wanted some brahmas for pets but couldn't find pullet chicks.

Married 35 yrs, homeschooled our 2 kids, 5 grand children and counting. We live on 36 acres and have goats and make goat milk soap.

Welcome to BYC, a part of your post got cut off but, no I am not new to chickens my first chicks I got when I was 7 I hatched them out of a borrowed incubator, and my moms friends hairdresser. We eventually had to get rid of those but I was able to get more this past year I started again with 5 RIR and 3 ameraucana, some dogs got 1 of each breed when they were 2 mo. old and then I had to get rid of my RIR roo he was getting mean with the girls and it isn't allowed you better be a nice roo or you are out, so this spring I started the year with 5 birds, I went to the feed store and got 1 leghorn, 1 silver laced wyandotte, and 1 blacktailed white bantam, the next trip I came home with an ameraucana, and then a week later my mother bought two more ameraucana and in 2 days I will have 4 ameraucana chicks and 2 ameraucana/RIR crosses

Hi and welcome to BYC. I can only imagine that keeping chickens is like riding a bike - you'll get back in the swing of things before too long, I'm sure.

The Learning Centre is a great resource, even for experienced chicken keepers - loads of info on anything chicken. http://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Joining your state thread may be useful as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area - just type the name of your state in the search box.
