I've scoured the internet and found a few pictures that led me back to BackYard Chickens, but no resolution was ever posted. Does anyone have any idea what this is and how I can help her?

About her:
She's a year old, free ranges part of the day, is in a clean coop with shavings, eats pellet food and black oil sunflower seeds in addition to ranging, and is offered free choice calcium. Nothing new in her diet or environment.

Is she an Austerlorp? Funny, my Austerlorp has a bulge too, except it's on her eye lid.

Does it seem to irritate your gal? Like, is she scratching at her eye? Or is there discharge from the eye? The only suggestion I have right now is possibly wash the eye with saline, and keep an eye on it.

I've been doing a little research about chicken eyes, as we've been dealing with a chick with an eye infection, and also watching this bulge on my Austerlorp's eye, so I'll let you know if I come across something.

Sounds like she's well taken care of, and she could not have a happier home!

Yup, she's an Australorp. :) It doesn't seem to irritate her at all and I don't see any discharge or hear breathing issues.

As it stands, I've rinsed it with saline and she's now quarantined in our spare coop. I'm considering adding antibiotic to her water in the morning.

I'll post if there are any updates. Good luck with your Aussie, SuperChickRuth!

Thanks for asking.

She's still in quarantine and today will be a full week on antibiotics. After about the third day I could see the white mass was shrinking in size. It's all gone now, thankfully, but I'm going to have her ride out the next few days alone and will allow her back in to the coop with the others this weekend.

How's your baby?

Sorry, I haven't been checking BYC as much as I should have. Good to see that your gal's doing better.

My gal's the same. Sigh. The bulge next to her eye doesn't seem to be shrinking, or getting larger... So um...
