I purchased 5 chicks at the beginning of March from the local feed store. I live in city limits so I can only have hens, but just my luck, one of the RIR's is a little roo. Is there anything that I can do, besides caponizing, to make him not crow. I wouldn't mind getting some fertilized eggs out of him, but I can't have him waking up the neighborhood and making a lot of noise. Any help would be appreciated.

Honestly, if it were me, I'd find him a nice home in the country where he can be a rooster and crow to his heart's content. I've never had a caponized rooster, so I don't know if even that keeps them from doing what comes most naturally to them.

From what I have read, caponizing them at a certain age will basically turn them into a "nice" rooster, with the temperament of a hen. I also read that canonized roosters are good with baby chicks. I don't know. I guess I will put an ad in the local classifieds and go get another chick. Thank you!
