I work at a vet clinic and we had a person bring in a duck egg that their dog found. It is opened and there's a live duckling in it, it's peeping and moving and appears to be ready to hatch. Should I just let it get the rest of the egg off itself? I have chickens but the only time I've dealt with eggs is when I let a broody hatch out some of her on her own. I have it wrapped in a warm wet cloth inside a box that is sitting on/wrapped partially in a heating pad and he seems to be doing fine. Should I just see what happens? He has not made any progress in his own since I got him this morning and I don't know if he started pipping or if the dog did. I believe it's a wild mallard egg. Thank you for any and all advice!

Type 'Assisted Hatching' in the search bar at the top of the page. Several pertinent threads will appear. Good luck.

Yes I saw that! The wet towel has helped a lot of the remaining membrane soften up and peel off, just don't know if I should do that the rest of the way or let him hatch out on his own, thanks!

If you start picking at the membrane and shell, stop immediately if any veining and blood appears. The problem lies in having the duckling hatch before absorbing the yolk. On the other hand, waiting too long is not good either. It's a fine line to be walked.

Yes I'm worried about the yolk absorbtion, ugh, will continue keeping a close eye and taking off what I feel comfortable with, he's very active when I talk to him so I feel like he's ok for now?? Hopefully I can get this resolved before bedtime or I will be up at all hours worrying! Haha
