Hi! New member from KY

Hi everyone just wanted to say hi! I am new to chicken raising and we just bought a 11.2 acre farm for my horses and now 7 chickens. I have a background in agriculture and work in R&D for an animal nutrition company.

I have 7 one-week old chicks right now. We were goign to get 6 but my fiance insisted we take all three of the Aracuna/Americunas they had left so that the one chick wouldn't be the only one in the bin. So we have 2 Buff Orphingtons, 3 Aracuna/Americuanas (Easter Eggers I think), 1 Golden Laced Wyandotte and 1 Black Australop.

I came here looking for help, advice and tricks since this is my first venture into raising poultry.

Hello, and welcome to byc!!:welcome

First off, you said you had easter eggers? I've heard they don't lay the tastiest eggs, but the buff orpingtons' are great!! Good luck with your chickens!!

They were sold at Southern States as Aracunas but I'm not sure they are or if they are full blood? . I don't know much about chickens aside from your normal Cobb and Ross commercial birds so I have no clue how to know if they are full or not.

I have to say the one Aracuna/Easter Egger/whatever she is is my favorite. She is sassy and funny and so entertaining.

Chances are you have an EE and that's great because they are terrific birds. Never heard their eggs aren't the tastiest. With my EE the only difference in her eggs from my other chickens, was the color...hers were beautiful bluish-green and tasted wonderful!

Have fun with your new chicks and thanks for joining us!

EE's are very popular.  I have never heard anyone complain about the taste before.  Some foods  any chickens eat can affect the taste .
