WHEW! It is hard to take a picture of these little luvies! Here are some much better pictures of the bawk, bawks as my children call them! I turned the red light off so you can see their true colors. From my last thread, the hardware store said they are pullets and the breed is Isabrown. A lot of people are telling me they look like Rhode Island Reds and Barred Rocks. I decided to start a new thread for this one. I don't think anyone saw this one, as I put it as a reply to my other thread. Sorry, I am still a new egg. I also had another question regarding chicken feed. We got a small yellow bag of the chick, medicated starter feed. They went through that rather quickly. We then went to our local farm store and purchased a big bag of the chick, medicated starter feed. The only problem with this is that the crumbles are MUCH bigger! They food looks more like pellets. My chickens are being picky little things and will not eat it. They are scratching on the floor looking for food. Then the silly little girls look up at me like yeah, where the heck is our food woman?! Hehe. I tried crumbling/chopping it up in both my food processor and in a bag and then hitting it with a hammer. Do you think I am worrying too much? Will they eventually eat it or is there a better way to crumble the food. I don't want it to get powder like and then they inhale it either. I feel like a new Momma again, but I love it so far! Thank you for all of your help and replies.

Welcome to BYC!

Among your chicks you appear to have Barred Rocks, Rhode Island Reds, and Red Sex Links.

Chick start should always be a finely ground crumble. What does the tag on the bag read? If it is nearly as big as a pellet I would return it and purchase a different brand, as chick feed should never be any larger than a small crumble.

Thank you so much for your warm greeting and valued information! I know it is hard to tell, but are they looking like pullets so far? Here is the difference between the two feeds:

The RSLs (should be the ones with a reddish body and white wings) are of course Sex Linked and so guaranteed female. The rest, BRs and RIRs, are too young to sex with any accuracy, though in a few more weeks any BR cockerels will begin to show much more white than a pullet ought to. Yeah, that "crumble" is way too big. Could be a batch thing (sometimes someone at the mill messes up and the feed isn't ground like it should be) or it could just be poor quality feed, but either way I would definitely return it and request a different brand. The protein is also a bit low - 18% is adequate but I'd consider 20% preferable.
