Hello! I'm pretty new to this whole chicken raising thing. I have 2 easter eggers and 2 sex links. One of the sex links is still young and not yet laying eggs. I she, named Ducky, may be a rooster .... mostly based on her (his?) behavior. I've been looking into how to tell the gender but I'm still not sure. Would ya'll mind weighing in? Ducky doesn't have sickle tail feathers, and the feathers are all rounded, but (s)he has iridescent green on her wings and brownish orange on her neck. Also, she is pushy with the other chickens, when she gets agitated she'll fluff out her neck feathers, and I don't know if I'm imagining it but I think she may walk a little taller. Any input would be helpful!

It's a pullet - that's the great thing about Sex Links, they're, well, sex-linked! They are named for the genetic action of sex linkage among certain genes (it relates to the hen's chromosomes - birds are opposite of humans in that males are the homogametic sex and females the heterogametic, ZZ and ZW respectively). All Black Sex Links and many Red Sex Links can be sexed with 100% accuracy starting at one day of age. In the case of the typical Black Sex Link, a red cock is crossed over a barred hen, producing female offspring which are black with red hackle leakage and male offspring which are heterozygous (single) barred with some red leakage.

Was it a cockerel, it would look like this:

Forgive any jargon I may have just spouted, I'm a genetics nerd.

She's a hen. Sounds like she is the alpha hen in your flock. With no roosters she would be the absolute boss, so has to act like one - or tumble down the pecking order. She's very pretty.
