Hello yall,

My one hen won't eat her food. She will eat bread and grapes and things of that nature but not her food. Does anyone know what could be causing this? And how would I go about treating it?

I thank you in advance!

Stop the bread, grapes, and other treats. What type and brand of feed are you using? Most good brands are easily accepted by chickens, but I once bought a feed when they were out of my usual one, and the chickens would eat it. I would take the feed, and mix some water, and a little plain yogurt into a shallow pan, and mix well. Most chickens love that, and she should eat if she is hungry.

I feed them Purina and she is over 2 years old and never had a problem eating the food. She does like it when I add some water to it. But can I eventually lean her back onto her feed without water? Like, how would I lean her back onto eating the food dry?

I would just slowly taper down how much wet feed she got daily, and then let her eat the pellets or crumbles dry. Just don't give her anything else, such as scratch or treats. after a week or so, I would take away the wet feed. The wet feed is not bad if she likes it to continue it, but the bowls have to be cleaned out daily.  Purina is a good product--that's what I use, and it has probiotics in it now.
