feeding chickens grass scraps from fertilized lawn.

I'm not sure what to tell my parents.  My Dad likes to give our three chickens the grass clippings when he mows the lawn.  My Mom was trying to persuade him not to because he used fertilizer on the front lawn (not sure how long ago).

I'm guessing the grass had little or no fertilizer on it when it was mowed, so should be ok.  That being said, I would rather the chickens not have the grass clippings if there is a chance it could harm them or us (by getting into the eggs).

I think it depends on what fertilizer was used.  If its just an NPK type fertilizer the grass is likely fine.  If it had weed control products in it, I would not feed it to my birds.  NPK fertilizer is basically what you get when they poop.  No real issue there.  Unfortunately many of those products include weed killers.  I don't want myself or my birds eating that crap which is why I don't use any of it.  Time to find Dads fertilizer bag.

Good Luck

Alice
