Mares and Geldings...

which are better to you mares or gelding i have only owned geldings but i only owned 2 horses i'm under 18 right now i have 2 horses one is haas he is a quarter horse draft cross he is 15.3 and he is a good boy but he likes to eat your shirt and the other ones name is toby he is a TN he is 15.3 but he has a lower back then haas and he likes to annoy haas 24/7 well when he can there in 12x12 stalls right now he is that horse that no matter how you feel he will cheer you up by making you laugh he is that horse that has a strong will and he is caring but he annoys haas till haas fights back and then toby thinks he is the big stallion of the herd(there both geldings) so he fights back and haas is smart and he backs down even though haas is 400 more pounds then toby i want to have more land as soon as possible i want another horse when i get more land and i'm hoping they can all get along with one acre per horse but i have my dream horse in my head it will be 16 hands and a buckskin color and the mother will be a Quarter Horse champion barrel racer and i good roper and the father will be 25% draft and 75% Thoroughbred and i don't know if it should be a mare or gelding (i know i'm thinking something that will never happen) and i want to know all of the pros of mares and cons and all the pros of geldings and cons of geldings i would like to put them together in pasture one acre per horse 4 different pasture to switch off of and i hear that the geldings will might for the mare and if the geldings will get dangerous because he doesn't want to leave the mare and for me pros for mares they are usually a bit sweeter and gentler than geldings and if your mare has no health problems and has a good temperament i might breed her once for a foal for me not for money my cons for mares are they can be a bit mean it early spring (i know why) and will squark liquids out of there rear and pros for geldings they don't get mean in spring if there geldings at a young age not stallions and nothing coming out of there rear my cons for geldings if there gelded to late then they have some stallion behavior and there usually not one to like to head cuddle but some geldings love to head coddle and some mares don't like to head cuddle and you can't breed geldings

btw i would love to be one of those "true cowgirls" but my parents like to play it safe so i have only been bucked off once in my life and at barrel/gymkhana shows i have to wear a vest which i hate but i would love to break and raise a foal and i'm hoping that my dream horse would be that horse that you can raise till it is old enough to leave it's mom without panicking too much

I've always been partial to mares, but my dad likes geldings. That was always interesting growing up when we needed a new horse! My first horse was a mare and I think that's why I love them. She was a great horse.

I do think individual horses are very different though, so I've met some mares I hated and some geldings I loved!

I prefer geldings. Their attitudes seem to be more consistent, and the ones I have are more friendly. My mare is a great quarter horse. But she is the herd boss and is mean to my geldings and can be a challenge for us.

My opinion is that mares are for producing feedings to ride.

I worked at a boarding stable for a few years; during that time, I got to handle in excess of a hundred horses for at least a few weeks each. Some were great to work with, some were awful, though I usually found at least something to like about each one of them. Of the four that I would rate as the most dangerous to work around, two were mares, two were geldings. I only handled one mature stallion, and he had been trained so carefully, he was a real sweetheart! Though all five of the equines that I currently own are female (one is a mule), I can't say I prefer one gender over the other, nor can I say I like one breed more than another, because each animal is different, and the range of behavior that I have seen is just too broad to allow me to try to lump them into any kind of grouping.

I have owned and been acquainted with quite a number of horses over the years. I have never found the sex of the animal to be nearly as important as its temperament.

I personally have always prefered geldings. They tend to stay more even temperd, where mares go through their cycles and can become moody and have some bad attitudes. Not all are that way, but the majority are.

Yes. Basically that is my opinion. I have a male horse (stallion) and a mare, but I LOVE them both. Above all (coat color, etc.) Personality is the #1 thing to look for in a horse. You could have the perfect color horse, but it be wild.
