We are having temps 15-20° below normal right now, and it is preventing my little duckies from getting outside! Right now they are crammed into brooders that are too small and none of us are happy. I have spent all day bringing them inside a couple at a time, so they can swim in the tub and stretch their legs. They have room to move around in their brooder but not much. Next week is going to be in the high 50s/low 60s, and night time lows in the low 40s. I plan on putting them in a covered enclosure. Inside the enclosure is a large plastic dog crate that I have rigged securely with a heat lamp. This way they can snuggle together inside to get warm at night.
Do you think this will be ok? They are all completely feathered out, and this is how I usually transition my new peepers outside, but it's usually 20° warmer. Tell me that they need to be outside in the grass and that I'm being overprotective. They will be so much happier with 5x more room and grass to eat and bugs to chase, and big ducks to watch (through fence).
Just for fun, here is a pic of the smallest 2 runners with my smallest 3 Pekins. They will all be staying inside until they get some more feathers.
