Dig aprons can be laid flat. Either under sod or on top with pins letting the grass grow through. Soon it goes back to lawn and can be mowed. Dig aprons should be 18 to 24 inches wide from run out. Animals dig at fence line, hit wire and move over to try again. They don't think to back up so 2 ft is plenty for large dogs digging.
I use 2x4 welded wire in 14 gauge. That stops all predators excepting weasels. We only use hardware cloth for the coop openings to keep weasels out. Close coop at night, every night. Couldn't imagine the cost of 1/2 inch hardware cloth to cover entire run and apron.
