Ash Grove Missouri
Its been awhile since I left the farm life and missed having farm fresh eggs. I joined the Army right out of high school and now that I have 2 young boys I thought why not give chickens a try to teach them some responsibilities. So know im starting a small urban flock for boys and myself.

Thank you sincerely for your time in service and Welcome to Backyard chickens. Do you want layers/meat birds, pets for the kids or ???? You may want to join your state thread and ask others what breeds do best in your area etc. Just put state name in the search box.

Thanks to you all for the warm welcome. We live here in Missouri. Our family lives about 20 miles west of Springfield. The wife is wanting what she calls rare pretty breeds. Im just looking for egg layers. I think she has narrrow the search to 3 breed. They are Creamed Legbar,Easter eggers, and Jubilee Orpington. I just want some fresh eggs and get my boys involved into something other then Micky mouse clubhouse. When I was young boy growing up on the farm in rural Missouri we had usually 50 or so Rhoad island reds that used for eggs and them for meat when they stopped laying eggs. I sure this won't fly with the boys and wife. The will make these chickens pets. But I think this could also be a good lesson for them on difference between pet and livestock. Thanks for your support and have a great day
