I have seven hens and only five are making eggs right now. They are almost six months old. My hens will scream at each other to get out of one nest box, so another hen can go to a different box. If no one is in the nest box the other hen wants, why not just go hop in? Each one will wait, until the other hen is out of a nest box before they will go in a box. The rooster will start to scream really loud right along with the hen that is next in line that wants a box. I use to have chickens 15 years ago and never had this show go on everyday. Is this the normal thing for chickens waiting in line to use a box? Out of the six nesting boxes, only four boxes are being used.

They may not actually be screaming at each other to get out of the nestboxes but singing the "egg song". And yes, they will wait in line for their favorite box. We have 6 hens, 3 boxes and they usually only use 2.

Thank you for the information. I am really enjoying learning all the different things that the chickens do.
