Hi all. I recently have been reading about quail and thinking that I may want to get some in the near future. I am looking for some extra information, I'm assuming there's already been threads like this before so even if someone could point me to the right thread, that'd be awesome.

The questions I have are...
I live in erie county, pa. I need a breed that will do well in our cold winters(they will be in a barn put of the elements but need to be able to withstand cold)

I am looking for a breed that is a dual purpose birds. I read that their eggs are very nutritious and my boyfriend also said the meat is delicious.

Also, anyone recommend a good place to order chicks or eggs?

If I do get them, I would like to incubate their eggs and keep a cycle going.

Any extra info would be great!

Ps.. everyone here is wonderful!!

Start by reading the "Sticky" thread at the top of the forum page. Lots of great information there to get you started.

Coturnix or Pharoah quail are great dual purpose birds to start with. They'll be fine in the barn as long as you provide enough light for them. They'll start laying at around 6 weeks and are mature for breeding or processing at 8 weeks.

Read the Tatanka Breeders Club thread for tutorial on how to select your breeding stock after your first hatch. You may not get birds this big, but it will improve your stock.

James Marie Farms has probably the best breeding stock available. He ships tens of thousands of eggs a year. You might be able to find someone local but check them out. A lot of the quail for sale on Craigslist are not as good.
