TSC sold as silkies, are they mix?

Got these "black bantam silkies" from tractor supply almost 2 weeks ago. They already started out looking much bigger than other silkies we have hatched. Now they look huge, and although they have 5 toes, dark feet, and black skin, their feathers are coming in much different than our others did.

Those hard feathers sort of indicate that they are probably silky crosses. I don't know where TSC is getting their chicks this year, but the silky chicks up here in NJ have been poor quality at best and crossbreds at worst.

Luckily I was able to sell them to someone around here just a few minutes ago that didnt mind if they were mixes and didn't suffer too big a loss. I thought when I filled out my info in their book that I saw the name of the hatchery they were from, but I'm not 100% positive I'm remembering it correctly so I won't mention its name. It wasn't one that I had heard of before though. This is 3rd time I've got chicks from them, and after this, I don't think I'll ever do it again.

We just had some of our own silkies hatch today and the tsc ones looked like giants in comparison. Also the tsc ones feathers on their underside were screwed up from the beginning. Never again, smh.

I also got my chicks from TSC. This is my first time ever raising chicks so I thought it would be easiest to get them from TSC. Next time I'll order from a hatchery and pay the $30 shipping to ensure I get better quality. They weren't even sure how old the chicks were so we're just kind of guessing. Ugh!

TSC gets their chicks from a hatchery....
Its always best to buy from a local breeder if you can. Better for the chicks because they don't have to be shipped. And better for you because you don't have to deal with losses from shipping and you can see and pick out your birds. Thats my $0.02 anyway.

I wonder if the hatchery these TSCs are using is one of those middle man hatcheries that contracts out to individual breeders. That might explain the high instance of mixed chicks this year...

I just responded to the third thread today in reference to cross bred silkies. What did they all have in common? They all came from TSC.

Yeah only local breeders for us from now on. We don't show our chickens, but we still want ones that look nicer. I got these home and realized they didnt have feathers on their feet at all either. I suppose I should have paid better attention when buying, but it was so crowded I got in too big a rush.

This is the tsc one the day I bought them

And this is one we hatched today. We got the tsc ones in hopes we could have some darker colors in our flock.
