Lice or Mites?

This month celebrates my first year of raising chickens. I have 7 hens and boy was I excited that they all made it through the cold Chicago winter. However, in the past few weeks one of my hens had a run in with an opossum which was bad enough but ended up with a hole in her head the size of a quarter from being pecked by her friends. I isolated her and she has healed quite nicely. Then 2 weeks ago I discovered my Polish hen had scaly mites. She has also been isolated and all the hens are getting slathered with Vaseline every couple days. Then yesterday I saw 3 red and bare bottoms in the coop. The Barred Rock hen was the only one that I actually saw bugs crawling on. They are very tiny white parasites around her vent. Are these lice or mites and what can I do about them? They have a dust bath area of DE, wood ash and sand. Obviously this did not prevent an infestation. Any help will be appreciated.

So now we have tried all the natural remedies for lice and mites not knowing which we have. Last we I moved on to Ivermectin after dusting with DE and Sevin dust. All of my 7 chickens have very red and inflamed bottoms and are missing a lot of feathers. I have cleaned the coop many times with everything I have seen suggested on BYC. How long does it take before I see an improvement? What's my next step? I am so distraught about this.
 
I'm dealing with mites too. It's yucky! Clean bedding, with permethrin dust under it. Dusting the birds with permethrin every seven to ten days works, and is the only approved treatment. Wear at least a N95 dust mask! I also use (unapproved!) Ivermectin on the birds, rather than dust them, for the sake of my lungs, even with the mask. I no longer use carbaryl, as permethrin works as well, and is still approved. Mary
