Rescuing Hens

Hi, I'm stuck in kind of a sticky situation(PLEASE TAKE TIME TO READ) So right up the street from my house there's this "chicken farm". Today I got a little curious so I snuck into the back where all the hens are(my back yard leads right into it). And what I saw was absolutely horrible! Rows and rows of hens freezing in the rain and the space they had each was at the most, the size of a shoebox. So I grabbed an egg to get an idea of there health conditions(I have hens) and just hardly tapping the egg it broke and bright yellow yolk ran out like water...what do I do?!?!? I can't live so close to something so horrible and not do anything about it!!!
 
A - don't trespass again, your intentions may be good, but doing so puts yourself in a bad spot and can complicate your efforts to address the situation.
B - contact your local authority agency that is charged with animal welfare and file your concern - *however* keep in mind that your idea of sufficient care and what is actually spelled out by regulations can often be very different -- consider the conditions of commercial laying houses with birds in battery cages -- most of us would find that unacceptable, but it is still legal.
 
You could complain to animal control I suppose but, there is a good chance they know what is going on and ignore it. You could also be charged with trespassing for being on their property and petty theft for taking the egg. You could try to get your local newspaper to investigate but, it's all going to come down to "how did you know?" Unless you can call in anonymously to report it.

It might be better if you could discuss with a lawyer because the chicken place is so close to you, they might want to extract revenge. All I have ever done is watch court cases on tv, that is not much of a background.

It could well be that what is happening on the farm meets legal requirements. Might be more constructive to consider raising awareness on the plight of commercial chicken farms, and encourage people to spend a little more on free range eggs IMO.
