New Chicken Mommy

Thread Starter

I have been stalking the forums for a few months now but finally joined today.  I grew up with horses, goats and chickens but haven't had any since I was a child.  We just bought our first pullets (they are just 4 weeks).  All RIR and we are loving every minute of it.  Maybe next year we will branch out on breeds.  Thanks in advance for the advice, answers and support!!

We have a few "favorites".  Ones that love being held more than others or have adopted unique personalities.  How do you tell your same breeds apart once they are full grown??  Do most people use leg bands?

"Truffle" loves being held and sung to, she falls asleep when I sing to her.  (Hopefully that's not a bad thing!)

Our pullets are production, from a local store.  The chance of a cockerel is slim but it will not matter either way.  We live in a rural area where there are no rules regarding chickens and we do want a roo, eventually, if not now.  I have looked into sexing chicks, especially RIRs, and I am keeping an eye on one of ours.  It's hard to see in the photo but her comb is much pinker than the

others already.  Not sure about wattle development though.  (The above chick is the same age, photos taken today)

So excited to share our chicks, to watch them develop and grow and to experience the role of chicken owner.

Welcome to BYC!

It can help to initially band the birds (I use colored zip ties) that are similar in appearance -  as things progress you will find you start noticing subtle differences in appearance and, more over, differences in personality and before you know it you'll be able to look at a bunch of "the same" birds and identify each bird on sight.

Where are we going, and why are we in this hand basket?

I set fire to the rain! Watch it pour as I, touched your face. Well it burn while I cried, because I heard it screaming out your name. And I threw us into flames. I knew that was the last time, the last time...I set fire to the rain! -Adele
