I bought my first 6 chicks Feb 17th and since I'm new at this, I bought them from Tractor Supply. It was the closest store to my house, to buy chickens. When the guy helping me catch and box them said, "I don't  know anything about these chickens." when I asked a question, I should have gone somewhere else, but I didn't. I wasn't worried about anything going wrong.

They were labeled "Black Sex Link" and "Gold Sex Link". Under the names it said "Rhode Island Red and Barred Plymouth Rock mix. I pulled them from the pullet pens but one of the black ones is a rooster. I heard him crow the first time this morning. I noticed he had a comb and wattle when the others didn't and he is very bossy so I knew I had some exciting days ahead. He has been the friendliest out of the three black ones. The other two are running away from me all the time. I guess he will turn on me sooner or later.  They also have feathery legs and feet. I don't think that is a trait of the Black Sex Link so I really don't know what they are.

Every time I ask Google a question about chickens, there  are five or six answers from backyardchickens.com, so I thought I should become a member.

I have four children who are all grown but the youngest one talked me into getting some chickens so he could have fresh eggs. He is helping me build a coop so I said, "Okay".

Welcome to BYC.  When your chicks are 6 weeks old you can post photos of them at  "what breed or gender is this."     Black sex links do not have feathered feet/legs.

I bought 25 pullets last year and ended up with 4 roosters. They were mean and ended up in the deepfrier smile.png
