I'm so excited! We just got our tiny backyard brood today. (black australorp chicks) I'm so glad to have found this online community--I'm sure I'll have more than a few questions along the way. :)

Hello and :welcome
We're glad you joined us!

Congrats on the new flock. This is a great site for chicken owners, you can also check out the learning center articles. There's tons of great information in there.

It's pretty nippy in Northern Illinois. Do you have them in a brooder with heat lamp etc? Don't think spring is ever coming. If you put Illinois in the search box, if will come up and you can post on the state thread. Others will be glad to answer your questions and help you locate what you need.

If you need to find out sex etc. At 6 weeks you can post photos at "what breed or gender is this." Sellers are not often upfront about this.

Hi! They are inside--in a brood box with a lamp and the curious eyes of kids and friendly old dogs

Thanks so much for the tips!

Welcome.

And raising those first chicks is exciting.

Heat lamp is pretty much a must. But so is CAUTION.
Be careful, and watchful with that lamp. Attach it in such
a manner that it CAN NOT FALL.

Spook.
