Help! My dearest hen Lilly, is the only one left from my original flock. I believe she is about 3/4 years old but may be older. She is a leghorn. She has not bin following the rest of my flock around (I have 5 birds) also on the bottom on her it's big like its a egg or fluid. Is she egg bound or what is it? She has bin like this for a little while, she isn't as mobile as she usually is. It's like the big thing in her is dragging her down or is heavy for her. also, if I touch the big thing inside her she opens up her mouth to breathe. Please help :(!

It's possible she is suffering from any number of different things, which could result in her abdomen filling with fluid. Is she full like a water balloon? Do you feel any hard masses inside her if you gently examine her?

If she were egg bound, she probably would not live longer than about 48 hours, so if she's been this way for a little bit, it's most likely not that.

Has she laid recently?

Can you bring her inside to monitor her food/water intake and see what her poops look like?

When she opened her mouth to breathe, could you hear any wheezing or gurgling?

Also she has not laid in a long time (she is older)

I would do some reading on ascites and its numerous causes. See if any of her symptoms match anything.

Let us know in the morning how her abdomen feels... Does she have any swelling to the LEFT of her vent?

so how do I treat her do I take a needle and syringe and drain the fluids in that area?

You can try it.

See if you can take a photo of any fluid that drains. Also, have a BUNCH of towels ready.

Like, more than you think you will need.
