I have 35 month old chicks and decided to give them sand. I filled a quart jar and attached it to a chick feeder. They ate all of it in one day is that normal or too much? How often should I give it to them?

That's a lot. It's not uncommon for chicks to eat sand or grit, thinking it's food. If you're feeding them starter feed, they won't generally need grit.

They are on starter/grower all they want but, I was surprised when I saw they had eaten all that sand. It didn't seem to hurt them.

Maybe don't fill the feeder so it looks like food, put it on the ground or in a different type of container? I've just been sprinkling some grit in there, I realize they don't "need" it but some can't hurt...
