hi i made the common mistake last autumn on buying a coop that stated that it will house 6 chickens. I ordered 3 hybrid gingers ready for the coop. thinking i could get a couple more in a month or so. Well it arrived and it barley fitted the 3 hens. I built an outdoor run and fenced it off so they could have more room. The run about 6x5ft. which quickly turned into mud even with alot of wood chips put down. So over the winter months it was hard work to maintain. So a rethink was in order as i still wanted a few more birds. Having a think and seeing the prices of the made coops that would suit 8 chickens, i decided to convert a reduced shed that was for sale. So i purchased the 6x4 shed and started to convert it. No more bending down to clean the coop

I added a ladder type roost and some old fruit boxes for nest boxes ( which they love). added vent holes so it had air flow. They loved the space. i added an outdoor run, which was 10x8. But again no roof over the run

. so again lots of rain in the UK and so lots of mud

Then we got offered a greenhouse that was 10x8. perfect i though. We added it to the front of the shed and took the shed door off so they could come and go as the pleased. ( not to much of a problem with killers here ) . So far its been perfect. We have windows in the roof, that i open to let air through, no more mud and smell

I am working on making a few mesh panels for the side to be able to fit in for the summer months as the weather gets warmer so will be cooler. The panels that are in the greenhouse are plastic panels so easily removed when needed. Ive separated an area for my new chicks to live in to get used to the older birds. which so far so good.
As a newbie will this work long term? i have 7 birds all together now. Ive used wood chipping as the flooring but will be converting to sand in the late summer. Would anyone make any adjustments?

No reason why it should not serve you well for a while to come IMO. Maybe if you could replace half (upper bit?) of each vertical "glass" panel with strong wire mesh it will be a lot cooler. I know summer is a bit of a joke in the UK (I'm from Yorkshire) but the humidity could make it a bit foisty in there if theres not a lot of air circulating.

Cheers

Thats what i was thinking... i just need to find away to fit mesh panels so i can remove them if needed.

Could you fit the wire on the inside of the frame? To be honest, your chickens would be fine all year round with the top halves of the side panels removed permanently - its moisture that gets 'em, not the cold.

All the best
