Hi
We live in Auckland NZ and we now have 16 chickens ( known by friends as the crazy chicken lady !!)
We started with 4 day old shavers for my son's school Ag day and adopted 2 eggs that hatched, followed soon by Henny Penny who ran out in front of my car so I took him/her home. Then came my special 6 year olds Christmas request of an incubator that he used finally to hatch 6 more chickens , closely followed by 3 more shavers from someone selling their chickens off.
The chickens all belong to my 6 year old Autistic son and he loves them all so much. He looks after them and talks to them everyday, he cleans them out and collects the eggs which he sells to raise money for his dream 50cc motor cross bike :)
We have lots of questions but this is the most pressing-
One of the baby chicks seems very small and doesn't seem to be like the others , she panics and runs around heaps. She won't eat unless I take her to the food and she holds head twisted sometimes and squalks a lot.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions .

Welcome to BYC. I have no suggestions other than posting a picture of the chick may help another member identify the problem and have some ideas for you. Ladymith Wisconsin.

Hi and welcome to BYC - glad that you have joined us.

I think the best place to post your question is the "emergencies, diseases, injuries and cures" thread. Pending expert advice, i'd suggest starting the flock on vitamin supplements / electrolytes.

Sorry, theres also an active thread about chickens and autism - maybe just type "autism" in the search box and see what pops up.

All the best

Without seeing her, I would imagine she is cold and that is why she is making such a racket. If she is a very young chick, she needs a heat lamp over part of her area (box, whatever) so she can go from the warm side to cool side - whichever feels best to her. If she holds her neck twisted she may have "wry neck." It would help a great deal if we could see photos of her. Sometimes folks even put up videos - so we can see how the chick acts, walks, etc.
