Help My Poor Hens

Okay , let's straighten this out for those of you who really can't see it ,

Spring of 2015 is when they were moved outside . Yes .

Heat lamps were added . No windows were sealed until winter ! Winter of 2015

My second Roo was butchered to eliminate fighting .

When the last roo and a hen got sick , they were lethargic . No the Windows weren't "sealed" , it was late spring early summer . Windows were open in the coop .

And the bleaching of the inside of my coop .. Yes the widows were open . Including the large window to the run , the two smaller Windows , and the door .

No need to ASSUME , you figured that one out ! Yes I lost a total of 6 ISA brown pullets to attacks by the two remaining Rhode Island Red hens . One isa brown had a broken leg and was also butchered . Sorry I missed that detail in the time line . That was between all of the fighting chaos .

Now add that up
1 unknown c.o.d roo
1 butchered roo
2 unknown c.o.d roo and hen
7 hens due to fighting
-----------------------------------------
11 birds lost .. Let's continue

Another ISA dead from RIR attack
Another ISA the next day from RIR attack but this states that she is not dead but bleeding and I don't expect her to survive .
Then another brown dies for unknown which I said I have on video for the vet .

That puts us at 13 dead , one injured , and four alive and well for a grand total of 18 birds that I've bought and raised .

The old house aka the coop is about 50 feet from my back door , if that . We carry the water by hand from an outside spicket on our house . No . There's no plumbing or electricity to the place . It's all disconnected . Concrete floor is my choice . We're all different . I find it easier to clean .

And then back to air flow . There is an opening to the run which surprisingly lets in plenty of air . There is no odor in my coop . As I've said in the original post , my birds are very clean contrary to popular belief . I live in the city with neighbors on each side . I couldn't have the birds if they stunk or the city would shut it down .

Also , as said in a previous post we scraped off all the old paint . It has been repainted numerous times in the past 16 years the family has lived here

Our hay bales are bought from a friend outside of town . There's no mold in them . We've gone through probably 5 bales already this year and haven't seen any yet .

The run door is ply wood . So are the covers over the old outlets . Ply wood . Not insulation .

The wood outside is 2x4s we mated out for support under a tenporary floor while we were still getting the inside of the coop finished up .

so that puts you at just 3 birds to Unknown cause of death. that really is not all that unusual. That is only a bit above 12% loss

The attacks are personality issues. I have heard from many people that the RIR and the ISA can be aggressive to each other especially if introductions are not done in a lengthy cage divided way (mesh between them so they can see, smell, hear but not touch)

Pretty much what I saw also, Rott.

Big number of birds lost mainly from in-flock fighting.

Small number of birds lost from illness and none after
bleaching the coop.

But losing birds for any reason hurts.

All the heating lamps and cords were the main things that I saw that really concerned me. Chickens can fly up and knock off those lamps or the clips that hold them can break and cause a fire. Extension cords can get hot, too.
