New layer or problem?

So we got 7 eggs today! We've been getting 5 the last few days and the most we'd ever gotten was 6 but my other EE quit after a few days. She finally decided to start back up and a new layer and we got 7 today! Woo!

But my question is one has a teeny tiny bit of blood on the shell and I was wondering if this was a problem or if it sometimes happens with new layers? The egg is the smallest one so I'm thinking it's the newest layer.

All the birds are acting very healthy and happy and totally normal. Albeit, their coop and run is too small but we are currently in the process of building a new one, which should be done this week.

Okay good! Thanks for clarifying and easing my mind on that. I am glad she is not sick or anything.

Also this is a little random but the one EE that only laid for a few days and quit and now started again, she didn't even start with a tiny egg like all the other new layers and go up in size gradually. Her first egg was HUGE, real long/tall but kinda narrow. Huge. And so is this new egg. It was weird though, for a little bit I thought her egg size shrunk because there were too colored eggs but they weren't as big. But now this one is really long again. And a pretty blue. Very weird. And actually, I believe her first egg was problematic, broken inside the coop, but after that it was huge. And a double yolker. Funny how some chickens don't bother with the whole pullet sized egg thing lol
 
The blood comes from the vent stretching to pass the egg. The big production companies would have everyone believe every egg is perfect, but they sort out the funky ones and put them in the cake mixes and such.

Thanks! That actually makes sense and glad it's a fairly common occurrence :)

We've actually really lucked out, only have had 2 broken eggs total, maybe 3, and one was just the other night when I was gone all day and didn't collect the eggs all day so I think they simply trampled over it. The first was the soft shelled first egg of the second EE. And now this little blood spot. Some of the eggs were pretty dirty but that was before we added new shavings. All the egg shells have been very hard and very solid too. No weak shells or anything. Only one was a double yolker, whicb I actually love double yolkers. One was laid in the run, one was laid under bushes, and 2 were laid in the darkest corner of the coop, but besides that, all have been in the nest boxes. I think we got lucky.
 
Hopefully your girls figure out the nest box is where they should go. It may be where you have the nests located. I've had the surprise one in the run before from new layer but other than that they line up for the nests if already occupied. They like small dark nests low to ground/coop floor in my experience.
 
Gotta try laying everywhere before they accept the nestboxes as the best place.

If your hens bottoms or feet are dirty the eggs will be dirty, and always some funky stuff in New layers as the system gets going.

Most lay hard shells at the beginning, than as the season goes on the shells get thinner due to larger eggs, the same shell amount is laid on each egg, and hens start to become depleted of calcium as they will pull it out of their own bones, so eggs get thinner and things like legs become bleached out. They recover during a molt.

Always provide oyster shells, in case they need it. You probably know that.

Very true! I initially put fake eggs in but when they were laying in the boxes I took them back out. Maybe they need a reminder lol all seem to be laying in the boxes now though. Accidentally opened the box on an Orpington this morning. She looked mortified LOL

And yup! Started providing it around 17 weeks :)
