Hen pecking at dog bite wound

Hen was attacked by dog 2 days ago. Searched BYC for what to do and found great advice. However, today is day 3 and she is pecking at her wound. How can I stop this. I have no access to a saddle and need ideas for something else to help her stop.

Is it scabbing over? It could be itchy!

Is there any redness, odor, or hard cheese-like stuff (puss) anywhere around the wound?

Is she separated from the others?

It hasn't started to scab over yet, I do have her separated from the rest of the flock. She lost most all of the feathers on her back and there are a few puncture wounds, one near top of her back and a few others on the side of it. The one at the top is the worst. It's oozing but clean. I washed her with a diluted solution of betadine and applied neospirin. Where her feathers used to be looks like it's drying out and getting better but I can't figure out if she's grooming/preening or picking at herself. Also, she's had a limp in one of her legs since the attack, I've searched her thoroughly and can't find a reason for it. I don't know how to tell if it's dislocated and am hoping with time that it gets better.

Clean wounds are good, and it sounds like you are doing a great job. I hope she's not pecking herself, but there's no telling what chickens will do when they are stressed. I hope it's just preening.

As for her limp, if there's any inflammation or swelling, you can add some turmeric (the yellow spice) to her feed to help with that.

If it's bad enough that she's struggling to move around, you could build her a "chicken sling." Search the top of the forum for more info on that... You can certainly get creative!

Other than that, make sure to offer her high-protein treats like crushed up boiled egg and meal worms to help her rebuild tissue, in addition to her regular feed and water. :)

Hope that helps!

I'm trying to post pictures but it's not working

It's been a long time for me, but I know you may have to have a certain number of threads/replies/posts to post pictures on BYC.... I think it's a minimum of 10 posts, if I remember.

Post around a few more times then try again. :)
