Help dog attacked my ducks

Woke to a duck trying to get into our coop. One is bleeding and another limping. Somehow the dog managed to get her leg. She's a jumbo Pekin. I have baytril. How much to give to her. I don't know how much damage as I'm just going out to clean up wound now. Thanks in advance.
 
I would get them into a tub of lukewarm water so you can

help them clean their wounds
reassure them, calm them down
take a good look, then

Check for puncture wounds, look under wings, around vents.
Trim feathers down to half an inch or so around the edges of the wounds.
Dab or drizzle mild saline solution on the wounds (don't add salt to the tub water, they'll drink it)

Ducks can recover from awful injuries.

Keep them in, away from flies (they'll lay eggs in the wounds)

I'd put electrolytes in their water - they may be in shock.

If you have Vetericyn spray, that is good for wounds. There are some other topical treatments available for shallow wounds.

Punctures can introduce bacteria to the bloodstream, so be on the lookout for signs of infection, and use antibiotics if needed.

Still looking at the damages. I did spray vetericyn on it but it's so hard to tell where the bloods coming from. Is baytril for infections? I have that in my medicine box along with corid.
 
Tub time should help rinse them off so you can find the wounds.

Baytril probably would be useful if infection sets it - hopefully you can clean them up and treat them topically and it won't be needed.

I need to turn in, will check messages in the morning.

Ok so I didn't get much done with her last night as it was late when this happened. I filed a police report and also called animal control because these 2 dogs that attacked my ducks are always in my yard. Now the next time they are loose I'm worried they will come back. After they left, it was very late. So Elsa slept inside and I did clean her injury and spray it with vetercyn. I had to work early this morning with no sleep. So I want to clean the dried up blood off of her. Can I use dawn dish soap in her bath to clean her wound and wash the dried blood. I can't see the wound but I know it's there cause of the blood. She can't walk. The other 3 are injured but no blood. Poor things - I feel terrible this happened. This never happened to us before.

I reckon you are all in shock.

Safety is extremely important - I think the dogs will be back,, and soon.

So fix the security - bring them in temporarily -

I gave Elsa a salt water bath no drinking of course. I got a good look at the wound and it looks pretty deep. It's where her leg connects to her body, that's where the dog bite is. I put alcohol in it along with vetericyn and providone. She's drinking vitiam water and she had some meal worms.

As for the other 3, they are in shock and missing Elsa. We fixed the coop up for the night. Our neighbor gave us electrical fencing to put along the coop but didn't do that yet. These dogs are pit bulls and better not be back.

What do I look for for infection?

You may notice the leg getting warmer than normal, or she may just be dragging and not quite herself. It is very difficult to be sure when a duck has a systemic infection early on. I would be cautious and give medicine if in doubt at all.

After initial cleaning, I would not use alcohol - that will kill her cells and set her back. The Vetericyn, or a saline solution spray should help. Clip the feathers back to about a quarter to a half inch long around the edges of the wound. Did you look under her wings and around her vent?

Keep her away from flies!!!!!!

Here is a story I saved from Captain Cluck years ago, I think it has some good ideas and information.

When my duck, Lucy, was attacked by a raccoon, I had head wounds to deal with, too. No jaw damage but she had a bite taken from the edge of her bill.

I put her on homeopathic for bites and vitamins at first, but homeopathics take a long time to work, so after a week on that (and an infection starting in the leg wound that I had missed) I switched her to Duramycin (got at Tractor Supply). Add 1/4 teaspoon to 20 oz of water (2 1/2 CUPS). Only mix up what you will use immediately and store the rest of the powder in a clean, dry jar. You will want to keep a measuring spoon in the jar just for the Duramycin. If you won't be using the entire 20 oz right away, put the extra in the refrigerator until you need it, but do not keep it for longer than 1 day. I have seen funk grow in it if kept longer than that. Lucy got her water in a 20 oz travel mug 2x a day.

After her first day of not eating, she only wanted cooked, mashed peas for 2 weeks. She refused anything else, so keep tempting your duck with things she loves to eat. You may have to use a syringe and squirt some liquified food into her bill to get her to eat. which means you will have to take some food and puree it in the blender and add enough water to make it liquidy. Lucy's bill was very sore and I had to mash her peas so she could eat them.

Examine your duck carefully to locate all the wounds you can find. Trim away feathers from the wounds so you can treat them effectively. Don't be afraid to trim away all her feathers if you think you need to to examine her. You can dress her in newborn t-shirts until her feathers grow back. If you keep her in a dim, quiet room, she will heal faster, and eventually start to molt. At least, that's what Lucy did.

Use saline to rinse out the wounds every day. Use a q-tip to pack the open wounds with antibiotic ointment.

If there is a puncture wound (which includes bites), you will need to debride it daily with a gauze pad. That means put peroxide on a gauze pad and scrub the scab off the puncture wound and scrub it enough to keep it open so it can drain. Punctures must heal from the inside out, or they get infected. Pack the punctures with antibiotic ointment, too.

Since you can't wrap a head wound on a duck, just let her wash her head at will. The only wound I wrapped on Lucy was her leg wound while it had Ichthammol on it to pull out the infection.


Let her rest and check on her every few hours. Change her towels at least 2x a day, or get those incontinence pads you put in a patient's bed and put one of those on top of the towel. Easy cleanup and less laundry. I got mine at Wal Mart.

I did not have the money for a vet visit, but if you do, I highly suggest taking her in.
 
Thanks for the great info. She is staying in the house so no flys. What is duramycin for? I have a tractor supply down the road. I'll give her another bath tonight and instead of rinsing out with alcohol I'll use saline solution. I wish I could afford a vet, she would be there already. We are doing our best and just hope she pulls thru. I only have 4 and they all mean so much to us. I think one of the khakis has a broken wing. It's hanging on the ground. What can I do for her?
 
You can try to set the wing using vet wrap - biggest concern there is not cutting off circulation.

Duramycin is an antibiotic.

By the way, the wing may not be broken, the muscle may be pulled.

Give them vitamins, perhaps a few tablespoons of dry cat kibble for snacks every day or two for the protein to help rebuild muscles.
