Several of our 1 year old hens have what look like downy feathers at the base of their tails, with our smallest hen also showing some mild feather loss on her wings. They free range all day, so if it is hen pecking I don't think it's due to boredom. There are 4 nesting boxes for 7 hens and we have one rooster. what else could be the culprit? And what to do if it is hen pecking?

Alright

great to have you joining the BYC flock

You might want to try looking at the roo but if you only have one it is unlikely ..

For henpecking you need to find out which hen is doing it and remove her that is how I do it not much of a way to put an end to it if there is plenty of room for all the live stock ...

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! It could be over breeding from your roo. It could also be a mite or lice problem, have you checked for lice and mites? If these are bothering them they could be over preening from irritation.

Good luck, I hope you find out what this is. Enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat :frow

Hi and welcome to BYC - you have some great advice already so I'll just say hello!

All the best
