I wish I could hatch more, but not right now. I have four sweet young laying hens, two adorable eight-week-old roosters that I hatched on my first attempt, and these babies. This batch of babies brings my total to ten, which is about the maximum my coop can hold.

Really hoping that more than one of the babies is a hen. Watching them closely for roostery-ness. My little roosters from the last hatch started developing pink combs and wattles at the age of fifteen days!

Here is a video of little spraddle-legged Petunia at one week old. Think she's actually a girl?

I'm about to go to war with my homeowners association. I just got a letter demanding I remove the chickens and coop by Friday. My HOA docs say, "no person may keep, breed, board or raise any animal, livestock, reptile, or poultry of any kind for breeding or other commercial purpose on any lot..." It goes on to say, "all domestic pets shall be properly restrained..." And "no animal, including a domestic pet, shall be kept on the property if the size, type or characteristics of such animal constitute a nuisance." I don't breed the chickens and I don't sell the eggs. I consider them my pets. There are other families in the neighborhood that have chickens. My chickens don't make a sound. My neighbor's 3 labs are more of a nuisance. I'm so irate right now.

Oh that is HORRIBLE! Sounds like they have no case against keeping chickens as pets at all. The fact that they lump "animal" together with livestock and poultry gives your chickens the same legal standing as your neighbor's labs. As long as you're not breeding them or selling eggs the HOA has absolutely no grounds for this.

What a nightmare though!
 
Oh, trust me. They're messing with the wrong person! I worked for attorneys for 6.5 years. They're wording on the documentation backs them into a corner and gives me every right to have the chickens. Nowhere does it say you cannot have poultry at all. It says you can't have them if you're breeding or selling produce. Also, because they did not define domestic pet, it's left up to interpretation. If they want to try to enforce something like that, it has to explicitly state under no circumstances are you allowed to have poultry on your lot. Or they have to prove I'm breeding or selling eggs, which they can't, because I don't. It's all just a huge headache I don't need right now!
