These chickens aren't what they should be.... What the heck are they?

So mixed breeds are a possibility? That "EE" doesn't really look like one, but I'll hold off pending better pics.

Although many F1 EE share common traits from their blue egg breed lineage, looks are not a sure thing as you never know what breeds are in the mix or how far removed from pure breed stock they are, especially when you get into F2 and greater generations...

mixed breed cockerel
pullet, probably a production red
pullet, probably mixed breed. With the color and white legs could be a Red/buff Orpington mix.

7 mixed breed, could be a cockerel
another red pullet
mixed breed, probably pullet
mixed breed pullet
mixed breed pullet. This one is different than the other mixed breed birds. Could possibly be an Easter egger, but doubtful with the straight comb and clean face. She'll probably be a brown egger.
Red cockerel
red cockerel(probably) or maybe mixed breed, can't tell if those legs are yellow or white.
red pullet
mixed breed, probably pullet but not positive.

16 looks like another Red/buff mix, pullet

red pullet.

All the birds I call mixed breed, except the one that looks EE-ish, put me in mind of Dixie Rainbows or Pioneers. They're a slower growing meat bird, and some folks have had good luck growing the hens out for layers. The roosters seem to be kind of aggressive to the hens when mating, and they get awfully big for most hens.

When you cross a Red, be it a RIR or production, whatever, with a buff Orpington, seems like you get birds that look like a few of yours, with the orangey red color. The white skin of the Orpingtons is dominant, so that's what those birds put me in mind of. They could also be the above slow meaties, there's quite a variation in looks of those birds.

I'm sorry your first chick experience has been such a less than pleasant one. But I love that first picture with your little one

Thanks for your thoughts. You're confirming my cockerel suspicion, that we had way more than we expected. Dang.
