Not quite sure what happened, but there was a thin shelled egg (some of my girls just started laying a little over a week ago) that was eaten on the floor of the run. There was a mess and broken shell, but only on the floor. For them to have gotten it out of the nesting box (not our first thin shelled egg-super easy to break), then out of the coop and down the coop ladder without a bit of wet mess means one of two things. I either have ninja chickens or someone laid it on the floor of the run. I'm hoping it's the second because if it's one the ground it's food to them. We've have seven eggs laid with no problem. Then this.

Anyone ever had a newly laying chicken lay outside of the nesting box and then the unmentionable happens?

New layers often don't even know what's going on. It takes a bit for some to find the nestboxes and to use them. Others appear to not know what they are feeling and perhaps think they have a big poop when laying the first few eggs. I'm pretty sure someone laid it outside, and eggs on the ground will often be eaten, one of the reasons nestboxes should be elevated. Your girls should get it right after a few weeks, use fake eggs to show them a safe place to lay.

Thanks for your reply. My nesting boxes are the second highest thing in the coop (rooting bar is first). Like I said, we've have seven eggs with no problems. I was hoping this was just an anomaly. Going to have to see if we have a golf ball in the house to put in the nesting box.

Thanks again.
