Chicks - 5 Gal Little Giant Waterer?

Hi All:

I've got 25 almost 3 week old chicks I'm moving from the basement cardboard box(es) brooder to a 8x6x3 brooder I built in one of our horse stalls in the barn. I've read do's and don'ts on using adult waterers for chicks, the primary concern being drowning or getting too wet and consequently cold. I'd like to use this 5 gallon adult waterer, if permissible. It has a 2" lip, and looks 'safe' to me, but this is my first time raising chickens. I could see them getting wet and then chilled, possibly. What are your experiences with these, and what would y'all recommend?

Thanks in advance for help and/or suggestions!

Maybe raise it up off the ground a little and put marbles in the bottom so they can't drown in it?

I think you'd be fine with the 5 gallon - I was just in my local farm store and they used one that had a very similar base size. The idea of marbles is a good one to prevent drowning, but I'd imagine that'd get annoying when changing the water every day? Overall, I think a 2" lip would be fine for 3 week old chicks, so long as they can dip their head over the top without feeling the need to jump in. :)

I'd love it if you would check out my blog: www.hensinmygarden.com. It's new, but let me know what you think!

Thanks to both of your responses. I moved them into the barn brooder tonight. I'm currently on a stool waiting for one to drink. They've found the food just fine. I'm not sure they know what to think of this 5 gal thing. :-) I've dipped a couple beaks. We'll see what happens. Tick, tock ... Thanks again.

They're drinking like madmen, and are more than fine with waterer's height. As long as no one gets sopping wet, I think they'll be good. Thanks again for the help.
