Is this barred rock a roo? Is it even a barred rock?

I agree that looks like an Australorp, and it's too early to sex. They can feather in with some white on the wing feathers, they molt out of them as they get their big girl feathers. If it's a female, I think you'll be very happy with her as a layer, they're champs at large brown eggs.

I mix ages in the brooder all the time. Closer is better, but 2 weeks shouldn't be a problem as long as your chicks have a good amount of space.

Feed store chicks do get mixed up sometimes. Look for a chick with a white head spot, smaller and tighter is better for a female.
 
So here is our Australorp at 3 weeks. I know it's still too early to know but wanted to update. S/he's still very slow in the feathering department...we did get a new BR chick and they've got about the same amount of big girl feathers at 1 week (BR) and 3 weeks (BA). S/he also has a bit more comb development so far than my RIR and BO of the same age, and just has that more upright stance. Still hoping for a pullet, though!


Just some wingtip feathers yet...hardly any tail to speak of!

These girls are almost 9 weeks now. Pretty sure our Austalorp is indeed a cockerel. Any chance it's just quick-developing in the comb department?

Evidence for it being a cockerel:
Slow to feather
Comb and wattle development ahead of others
Top of pecking order

Evidence for it maybe still being a pullet:
About the same size/leg size as the others
No crowing yet

Looks like a cockerel. I have 6 BAs that will be 9 weeks old Wednesday and my boy looks just like that. All the pullets still have white combs.

That is way too much comb, way too early for a pullet. It's a cockerel.
 
I read the thread yesterday, can't remember which one, but the person had a black australorp they thought was a rooster, until it laid an egg. So don't give up yet on your little black chick. Wait till it crows or lays an egg.
 
Thanks all. Deep down I think I've known this one was not like the others for a long time. We have a good home lined up for him, but it'll still be sad to see him go! We plan to keep him for a bit longer anyway.
