when i was 4 years old my grandmother took me to the zoo. when i saw the peacock strutting, i lost interest in the monkeys and other animals and followed the peacock all day. I WANT A PEACOCK, i said and grandmother said MAYBE WHEN YOU ARE OLDER.

i am older now (84) and i have just bought my first peafoul, a pair 6 1/2 months old.

i have a unique problem and hope someone can help with advice and experience. i live in downtown lima peru in a large penthouse apt (9th floor) with a large 10th floor roof garden. i have the pair in a small glassed in greenhouse with screen on one side. i have made a high perchinside and they seem very happy. i let them out into a grassy area next to their house for an hour each evening before i feed them and they love the grass.

i have clipped the flight feathers just leaving the first two. i am hoping to train them to stay on the roof by gradually letting them explore the rest of the roof garden with the hope they will always return to their home, the greenhouse. do you think this will work?

there is another building 8 floors next day. other building in the area are lower, three or 4 floors. i am afraid they might try to go to the building next door.

there is a hotel in lima (hotelespana.com/pe) that has a 4th floor roof garden with peafoul. i hope to talk to them soon to see how they trained theirs.

That would probably be best. I and I don't know many that have experience with roof top peafowl.

it won't be long until they spook and hop over the side. With being clipped they may not be able to save themselves from hitting the ground at a very high rate of speed. You should either keep them penned or get a cage bird instead. Sorry if I am too blunt, but both myself and wife went, "Oh my god".

totally agree, this does not sound like a good setup for peafowl. Also, not to sound blunt either or anything but at the op's age and considering how long peafowl can live, they will prob. outlive him.
I'm not getting any younger here myself, one reason I'm not adding any more long living birds to my farm as it is .
Also, just how hot is it going to get in a glassed in greenhouse on a rooftop in Lima Peru ? I would think it would be a tad bit on the warm side, perhaps too much so.

Lima is in the middle of the desert but located on the pacific so there is always a cool breeze and the house has a solid back wall and a screened front. They actually need the protection from the wind. I am from ar. And it gets much hotter there in summer without the cool wind.

OMG! I,m too old, you should have told me before I married a woman 20 years older than me!

"I WANT A PEACOCK, i said and grandmother said MAYBE WHEN YOU ARE OLDER."

All I can say is you sure took your grandmother literally.

Not to be teasing, really, and am very glad you have fulfilled your lifelong dream but just try and do what is best for the birds overall.
I want a giraffe too but I don't have the adequate facilities for them and again...like I say...I'm not getting any younger.

Can you walk around up there yourself barefooted on a nice hot sunny day ? If so then they prob. will be ok, heat wise that is.
You may want to consider putting some shade cloth or tarps up there to # 1, block some wind, # 2 block some sun and heat.

What he means by a cage bird , I do believe, is something like a parrot or a canary or other smaller bird.

The roof area is 3000 sq. ft. Their glass house has a solid roof and heat is not a problem here I can screen a larger area if neccesary. Maybe roof is a misnomer. The 10th floor is all finished with a guest apt, herb garden, lawn and several beds with trees and plants. My 3000 sq ft apt .below has no a.c. And is never uncomfortable.

Are you saying put the smaller birds with the peas and it will keep them home? my housekeeper and handy man take care of them, but I always feed them my self.

My joke fell flat, I married a woman 20 years YOUNGER than me. Lol

Even if I cannot let them free range l have adequate space to fill their needs. I do have two small Amazon parrots with them. I also have a large green Amazon parrot and I am looking for another..
