innercity peafoul

when i was 4 years old my grandmother took me to the zoo. when i saw the peacock strutting, i lost interest in the monkeys and other animals and followed the peacock all day. I WANT A PEACOCK, i said and grandmother said MAYBE WHEN YOU ARE OLDER.

i am older now (84) and i have just bought my first peafoul, a pair 6 1/2 months old.

i have a unique problem and hope someone can help with advice and experience. i live in downtown lima peru in a large penthouse apt (9th floor) with a large 10th floor roof garden. i have the pair in a small glassed in greenhouse with screen on one side. i have made a high perchinside and they seem very happy. i let them out into a grassy area next to their house for an hour each evening before i feed them and they love the grass.

i have clipped the flight feathers just leaving the first two. i am hoping to train them to stay on the roof by gradually letting them explore the rest of the roof garden with the hope they will always return to their home, the greenhouse. do you think this will work?

there is another building 8 floors next day. other building in the area are lower, three or 4 floors. i am afraid they might try to go to the building next door.

there is a HOTEL IN lima (hotelespana.com/pe) that has a 4th floor roof garden with peafoul. i hope to talk to them soon to see how they trained theirs.

Others here will likely have more experienced advice about keeping peas in the city.

But in the meantime, I very strongly suggest that you do not try to let your babies free range on your roof. Peas are very nosy and curious, and sooner or later they will try to leave in order to explore, or something will frighten them off the roof. It looks like you have clipped the secondary flight feathers? Secondary flight feathers are their "landing gear," so if they did ever try to fly off the roof, they could be seriously injured when trying to land.

I wonder if you might be able to make them another enclosure on the roof?
Perhaps you can have someone construct a larger pen in the roof garden, so that your peas can wander further, enjoy the grass more, and still be safe.

*By the way, I see the other question you asked...you definitely have a pair there, the boy is on the right in the first picture!

The roof is 3000 sq ft and their cage is in the central area.. I can enclose a larger area. I am supervising them when I let them on the grass near the cage. I am being very cautious and do not let them out unsupervised. Thanks for your help. They are hand raised and very calm so far.

I see you have received good advice on the other thread.
But you definitely have plenty of room on the roof, which is lucky!
So please err on the side of caution and build a bigger pen for them, and they will be happy and safe...
