Toolshed Coop

Ridge, gable, and eave vents should work well all year round....
....I like top hinged windows that can stay open in most weather during summer.

Even then, can't make it cooler/warmer and/or drier than it is outside.
Best to have lots of air movement in summer(the heat can really stress them),
gentle air movement in winterwhile blocking any strong drafts(feather ruffling strong) from roost area.

It's a touchy balance that can need to be adjusted during the fist couple years of experience.

Trimmed out the windows (put hardware cloth under the 1"x4" trim). Cut out the pop door and built a little deck below it to run a ladder down to, and then an additional one to the ground. Also hung the doors, one of which is a Dutch door that I made. Last thing to do besides roof and paint is cut in some gable holes for ventilation, and build a drop shutter for the big window. Lots of rain in the forecast, so paint and roof are going to have to wait a few days. It's all coming along though. It's been a lot of fun thinking things through as the building progresses. Thanks to all the BYC's that have given me so many helpful ideas and suggestions!

I swear the stairs are level.

A few more updates. I built another pop door today, and cut in the gable vent holes.

I'm going to divide the interior into thirds. This pop door will serve a room for hens w/chicks, nasty cocks, or if I decide to get a few broiler birds this summer.

The doors themselves I built like this:

The gable vent hole idea I got from @MoonShadows . I liked the design, so I went with it.

The 1"x4" on the bottom is hinged, so gravity holds the cover in place.

I'm about ready to caulk everything and slap paint on. Thanks for looking.

A pic heavy update. The coop is done and the chicks moved in last night. It was a fun project. Though I thought about putting pontoons on it because of all the rain we've had. Again, thanks to BYC for all of the great suggestions.

The painting begun:

Nest boxes built:

I put down Blackjack 57 (which is really nice). Once it was dry I installed the roost. It's 80" wide.

I divided the coop into 3 rooms. The small one to the right is storage. The bigger one is for broody hens, or roosters who need to go to the chopping block.

I put a pop hole in the bigger walled in room.

I made a simple jig to build the doors.

For the Dutch Door I made a screen:

Here is the finished product, roofed. On the back wall I cut out some air vents that are covered w/hardware cloth. The front shots are with both doors closed, and then with the screen inserted. I also built little awnings over both pop doors to keep the rain to a minimum.

And here are the chooks loving life. Thanks for looking.

I thought I'd post an update of the coop. Instead of building a permanent run I've decided to stick with the Premier electric net. I like it a lot, and the birds seem to also. It's nice because it is easily moved around so when they scratch up an area of the pasture I open up a new area to them. I plan to seed bare spots with cool weather grass this fall and keep the birds off of it until it grows back in the spring. I've not clipped any wings and have only had two fly outs . . . because one of the roosters is relentless with the girls. That being said, I got my first pullet eggs the other day.

Overall I am really pleased with the way things have turned out. The birds have lots of room in and out of the coop, they haven't had any problems with the heat this summer because of a lot of air circulation in the coop, and the shade underneath it. I've not lost any, and as of now, they are all healthy. Fingers crossed it stays that way!

The ram likes hanging out with the chickens too.

Really great job!

Thank you. I keep getting a few more pullet eggs, so I'm hoping in a month or so to have a consistent number for breakfast. :) Also, 4 of the roosters are slated to become chicken and noodles in the next couple of weeks. I'm tired of getting spurred. :) Thanks again.
