Hi Everyone:

I've been working, on and off, on this coop for the last couple of weeks. We bought one of those 12x16 kit tool sheds, but never managed to get it built as a 'tool shed'. So, we decided to turn it into a new coop. I elevated it as there is no shade in the pasture. Hopefully that will give the chickens a little break from the summer heat. Also, as you can see, I built it on a slope in hopes that drainage for the run (yet to be constructed) will be adequate. I got the soffit, fascia and outside corner trim completed this evening, but didn't get a picture. I grew up in a family of carpenters, so I've done everything by myself (btw: it has been a LONG time since I last framed). It's been a lot of fun. Now I'm hoping the chicks will think the same thing when it's all said and done.

Thanks for looking!

Beams for the deck

Its about 5 feet from the ground to the top of the closest beam.

Decked

Outside walls framed and sided. I am planning to put one pop hole on the left-hand wall, and build a sort of deck, then have the chick ladder go down from there, to the ground, where there will be a run.

Gable ends up

More pix to come . . .

Looking good! Its fortunate that you have great carpentry skills -left to me, any structure would fall over in 10 seconds!

Don't forget to get a lot of hardware cloth to keep out predators!

Thanks, everyone. I'll post more updates when I get a little further along with it. I appreciate the comments!

A couple updates. I should be way further along, but we've had a goodly amount of rain lately. In the next couple of days I will trim the front windows and hang the doors, then it will be ready for paint. After that, felt and shingles. Then I'll knock the interior out in a day, and the chicks can take up residence.

Thanks for looking.

Ventilation?
Not really too late to extend roof lines for overhangs to protect open windows and add more ventilation.
What is your climate/location?

@aart - thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to put in gable vents/holes (haven't decided yet) on both gables, ridge vent spanning the entirety, and two pop holes, in addition to the 3 windows. Over the big window, which faces North, I'm thinking about building an old fashioned drop shutter (sorry, I don't know the technical name for it). Also, I'm going to turn at least one of the doors into a Dutch door. Hopefully, that will be enough ventilation. What do you think? On the climate: hot and humid in the summer, often bitter cold in the winter. Thanks again for the suggestions!
