Muscovy Ducks Aren't Laying

I hope someone can offer some advice as we are very new to this. About a month ago we acquired a pair of chocolate Muscovy ducks hens that we were hoping would start laying for us. Although they eat laying pellets (mashed with water) and are active and forage all day we have not seen an egg yet.

We live in Southern Maryland. The nights have been a little chilly though we are seeing temperatures in the 70s this past week. Both birds are active, eat a good bit of food and forage, and appear to be in good health. They sleep nights in a chicken coop and they roam during the day.

Can anyone offer suggestions for encouraging these birds to start laying eggs?

Where they laying before you got them? How old are they? It's likely the move caused some stress so they would have stopped laying for a couple weeks.

Egg laying has more to do with the length of the day then the temperature. Ducks need about 14 hours of sunlight to lay.

If they are of laying age... Have you checked your yard for signs of a nest? They could be laying under a bush or something. Muscovy are notorious for brooding so they are going to want to start laying a clutch of eggs in secluded spot. You may need to go on an egg hunt.

Thank you for the suggestion! I'm thinking we are having a photo period issue combined with the stress of their recent move. I found some solar powered led holiday lights that i plan to string up in the coop to increase day length. We will see how it goes.

I have thoroughly scoured the yard, no hidden nests.

I'm not convinced photoperiod is the issue. I didn't start using supplemental lighting until very recently and generally mid March they start laying, and I'm in RI.

The important questions that weren't answered are how old are they and were they laying before?

Hmmmm! We were told they were laying before or that they would start soon.  I know of no way to figure out their age just from appearance.  Any tips?

Well if you don't know for sure they were laying before it may just be they haven't started. I don't know if you can tell how old a Muscovey is just by looking. I think they get more red on their face as they get older but I wouldn't be able to tell an older from a younger duck. Maybe you can post a picture in the Muscovey thread and see if those folks will be able to tell.
