I never owned chicks and of course I came home with 12.
3 being bantam.
1 Silkie
8 left after that. I found out last night they are probably cornish hens. I am so upset.
I don't have the heart to butcher. They have become my babies, yet I dont want them to suffer with health problems.
What is a girl to do????
The Bantams purchased at the same time are so attached and vice versa.
Broken Hearted....
All I wanted was some chicks to lay eggs.....

If you restrict the amount of food and get the Cornish x chicks to exercise - put food dish farther away for them, etc. let them free range with the others - it can extend their life and health. But, I don't think any have lived to be a year old. They are meant to have a very short life and their organs give out early. Sorry, I can feel what you are going through. I know people have to eat but, so sad about them.

Maybe you could find a farmer who would take them in.

Drumstick Diva,

Thanks for your reply. I decided I am going to keep them, feed them greens and throw the food around, so they have to work for it, just really sad for my first experience with chicks for this to happen. Maybe I can find someone who really needs them if not, then I will love them and they love the bantams as if they are there children.
