Yeah we went through a really crazy time with our chickens, we had a bunch of chickens between 2 and 4 years old and our first batch of chicks ever were the 4 year olds. Two years later we added more chicks our Golden comets, but sadly all our other chickens became bad Egg eaters, and they taught our comets too. =( so just like a week ago we re-homed our older grown hens, we were getting 2 eggs from 20 chickens, the rest were all being eaten. But last year we had gotten chicks also, and they just turned one now and we kept them because they didn't learn the egg eating trait yet, thank goodness! So we only have 3 grown hens and a young bantam hen. And we have been hatching and buying more chicks and now we have about 15 rising laying hens, we had a lot of roos too. One time while we still had the other older chickens and the new babies we had 51 chickens and chicks all at one time!!!! But then we rehomed 12 roosters, and gave away our older hens to a farm who will just let them free range and don't really care about how many eggs they lay. ( we couldn't bear to kill them! Ever! ) so then after that just today we got 4 more new hens and we are finally done for the year, with four boxes of chicks all at different ages. It's been pretty crazy chicken year. Okay I just realised I had been blabbing on and this post is like a mile long! Sorry guys! Okay to answer your other questions, yes I do raise silkies, they are actually my very favorite breed of chicken. I had a beautiful Silkie hen that turned two last year, but then someone in our neighborhood let their dogs free to go all over our yard and while we were at church they murdered her and another chicken. Then came again and murdered ANOTHER chicken! About a month later, She was my very favorite chicken, and I still miss her! But this year we got 5 Silkie chicks. I have never noticed a problem with silkies feet more so than my other chickens about getting to cold, but we only get to around 12 degrees F at the very least usually. I would think they would keep warmer being covered with feathers. If you do decide to raise silkies you will find that they are some of the friendliest chickens ever! ( well, except the roos )
Okay now on to the chickens breeds I have and have raised...
In the past I had raised:
I am raising now:
Rhode Island Reds
BB Red Bantams
And Mille Fleur Bantams =)
Right now the only comet we have is a young Swedish Flower/comet mix, I miss our other Comets though, I wish they never became Egg eaters.
Sorry again this is so long!
