What about flooring? Is putting a vinyl surface down really needed? I guess I hadn't really planned on having to do something to the floor

Technically, you don't have to do anything to the floor but it can be beneficial to put some sort of covering down. At the very least you could paint it with some good quality seem gloss exterior paint. The reasons being 1) It is much easier to clean if you have it painted or some sort of covering. Wood floors are porous which makes cleaning difficult if for some reason you need to give it a good wipe down or disinfectant (think sick bird or God forbid, predator attack and bloody mess, or a broken egg laid off the roost overnight- its rare but could happen). And then there is reason 2) it can help with pest control. Mites burrow down into wood to hide and lay eggs at night and then will feast on your birds blood, making sad sick birds during the day. By painting or putting a coveringon the floor, you inhibit the potential for these pests and for their breeding capabilities.

My suggestions...

Gable vents with shutters, instead of ridge vent, why mess with a good roof.

Thickly painted plywood floor.
