Hi! I'm not sure about space requirements, but, you can absolutely just hose the poop down into the grass or rake some of it up, and it doesn't hurt the grass at all, I believe the nutrients in it are good for grass.
The smell really isn't that bad, as long as you keep things clean. Water has to be changed frequently but if you're just using a little kids pool or something that's easy.
We have a basic filter set up, going for 2 weeks and that's kept the smell completely down, it just runs it through clay balls and some lettuce and cabbage plants, using a pump.
You can see the little set up in the back there before we added the plants, very simple, but honestly you're fine just dumping it out onto the garden as long as your pond for them is small. Excuse Sophie taking up most the picture, haha.
I use wood shavings as their bedding and just clean it out daily, if I left it for a while it'd stink but it's fine as long as I change it within a few days, I know other people use other methods for bedding, I haven't really looked into that stuff.
I love my ducks, I have 3 cayugas, they're not super friendly yet, they're just reaching maturity at 21 or so weeks, maybe 22 by now, hatching them should get you more friendly ducks, mine were 3 weeks old when I got them, which is supposed to be their scared phase. And as I spend more time with them they're getting better, they'll let me hold them for a few minutes now, they don't like being picked up, and they struggle sometimes, but they settle down for me. I'd definitely recommend ducks
My babies, Sophie at the front, Mei on the left, Kiki, my drake, at the back.
I hope this helps! Good luck!
