Building RIGHT NOW and have a design question!

So construction on the new coop is continuing and we have a question. On our current coop (which was a kit) the nesting box lid has about a 1 inch gab between the wall and the lid when it is closed and hooked. Is that gap important for ventilation or no? We are going to build a nesting box and the guys want to know if we should have that gap or not. Thanks!!!
 
No, that gap isnt necessary, or in my opinion, wanted.

The amount of venting that little gap would produce is negligible. Seems like it might let rain in there as well.

Here's how i did mine if it helps. I had a hole cut out and framed in the side wall, then this slipped in tightly and was secured to the wall frame. The piano hinge helps keep rain out as well.

Very very nice and I have seen where some folks put/staple a simple flap of cut inner tube over that piano hinge to further protect from weather...lol we don't want wet nesting boxes, now do we?

We've had some big rains here in Texas recently (BIG RAINS), and so far it's been dry as can be. Between the roof overhang, the trees, and the caulk i put between the wall and the wood, we've done good.

I have some extra garage door weather stripping ready to go if it becomes an issue though.
 
Thanks, we are going to go with no gap. The coop will have a window so there will be plenty of ventilation. They are behind schedule so they haven't started the nesting box yet but this is what we have gotten done.
