We're getting our backyard landscaped in June. We are doing our "Chicken Homework" now, so we'll be ready in spring! We get lots of snow in the winter and 100 degree heat in the summer. We're looking at Wyandottes! Any thoughts?

Don't have any Wyandottes so can't tell you anything breed specific, but build your coop bigger than you think you will need it to be because chicken math will hit!

How cold does it get in the winter? Snow is one thing but temperature is another.

Also are they going to be able to free range every day?
Will there be insulation in the coop?

With my experience with Wyanndottes, they are heavily feathered even in the summer, but mine have survived 105 degrees, and -70 (windchill)

We are looking to getting an insulated coop with a large attached run. In the winter it nomally gets into the teens and twenties. I've lived in the foothills here for 25 years and have never seen it dip below 0. You can rest assured that if it does; they'll be sleeping in the guest room. LOL

We plan to insulate. It usually get down to the teens or twenties in the winter. If it dips close to 0; they'll be staying in the guest bedroom! LOL!

Teens and twenties is perfect for Wyanndottes, they would probably be fine without insulation, they'd just need lots of hay to curl up in.

I also recommend Chantecler, they are some of my favorite birds, good dual purpose, and go broody, are great mothers

Welcome to Backyard chickens. I think you will get good advice if you post on your state thread and ask what breeds do best and what type of coop. Just put state name in the search box, and it will pop up.
