I've been incubating a duck egg I found after something destroyed the nest. I have so far had great success with just my heat light and making my own humidity. The duckling has grown according to all charts and moves when I put it in water. We are on day 27 and the duckling hasn't broken the shell. Am I doing anything wrong? Is it too soon to hatch? What do I do from here? I rescue ducks all the time and release then back but this is my first egg.
Any advice is welcome!!!

:welcome! I'm impressed you managed to incubate it with a heat lamp! It's not due to hatch until day 28 so give it some time. Especially with using a heat lamp to incubate it your temperatures could have been low which would cause a late hatch, so if it doesn't hatch by day 28 don't panic.

Is this a mallard egg? Do you have permits to rehab wildlife? If not technically it's illegal for you to own the duckling so just be aware of that and maybe keep it to yourself or you could face fines.

When it hatches, if you are not a wildlife rehabber, I'd get it to one so that it can be raised in a way that it will be able to survive in the wild when it is grown. If it is raised like a domestic duck it won't know how to care for itself in the wild.

If it's not a mallard egg and is a domestic breed, don't release it into the wild because domestic breeds can't care for themselves in the wild. Instead either keep it or find it a good home :)

Thank you for the advice, I won't worry to much, still no hatching but I'm hoping for some success. I have 12 mallard ducks that I have released we have a 2 acre pond, so far all the ducks after spending much time with me have done wonderful being released back into the wild. I work closely with wildlife and have all my bases covered :)
I appreciate your advice, as I am new to this.

Still no duckling but trying hard not to worry. I do wish I had more advice on this and what to do if it doesn't hatch
