Hi my name is Heather, I'm from Tasmania and I've had chooks since I was 10 when in grade 4 we hatched chickens as a project. I've recently bought some new pullets after my last lot of chooks were taken by our dogs.
They are Dilly Dilly the lavander ameracana, Betsy and Moss the Bantam RIR's and Ginge the buff pekin.
My last lot of girls were very friendly Cocoa, my 9 yr old Welsummer/Wyandotte along with Fraidy Kat my 1year old crossbreed were hand reared and the others would just follow their lead until they got used to me. Now these new girls haven't had any handling, ( if it was up to me I would have gotten day olds to raise myself so they would be friendly buty parents didn't want to risk getting roosters) these girls can be very flighty, when I let them out of a morning they shoot out of the coop and are off. They won't take food from me as of yet, I've tried getting into the coop with them but that just resulted in the girls panicking. Now if I want to check them over or dust them for critters I have to do it at night. Is there any way that I can gain their trust? Also Ginge the pekin has started pecking when we pick her up at night, I'd like to try and resolve this before she gets into a habit since we have littles who love to come feed them.
