One of my Pekin ducks died, should I get a new one for my other Pekin?

Monday morning I heard one of my Pekin ducks going nuts outside, and I walked out there and only found one duck, with other feathers all over the place (some feathers were bloody) and that's when I relized something got one of my ducks. I went outback to go see if I could find the duck, I did, it was horrifying, we buried it, so we didn't leave the poor thing out there in the woods. But now my question is that I don't know if I should get a new duck for my other Pekin duck. Will my Pekin get along with a new duck, or should I get a duckling? And would it be ok if it was a different breed of duck?? Please helpūüėä

Welcome to BYC! I'm glad you joined us! :)

I set fire to the rain! Watch it pour as I, touched your face. Well it burn while I cried, because I heard it screaming out your name. And I threw us into flames. I knew that was the last time, the last time...I set fire to the rain! -Adele

Hi welcome-byc.gif

Glad you could join us here I'm sorry it's not under better circumstances. Sorry to hear you lost a duck. I'm not a duck person but I would say adding a grown duck would be easier. Please do pop by the duck section where I'm sure the keepers will be able to help you. Here is the link ~ http://www.backyardchickens.com/f/42/ducks

Good luck and enjoy BYC frow.gif

My hen mallard was killed by a cat. I had a Peking drake left all by himself.

Knowing I could not stop it from happening again, I gave him away to a lady who raised ducks.

She had a large pond and he was quite happy.

If you are going to get another duck an adult would be better.

If you want a duckling I would at least get two and raise them from 5-6 weeks before you turn them out with the adult.

I think it would be best as Quail Barn  did with her drake.   If possible maybe you could start again but, with more,  maybe 2-3 females and one drake.  That way is something happened to the drake, the females would do fine without him.   And by having more females, hopefully you won't be left with just one.    Please do explore the predator threads to find out how to safe guard your flock.    Whatever predator scored the kill will be back until it has all your birds.

Yes, thank you for the help! I'm positive it was a coyote (more than one because they only travel in packs) so I'm building a bomb proof chicken coop now ūüėä
