I went to get my new chicks yesterday. I was to pick up two Welsummers and one other. The lady who I got them from had, among others, also ordered Brown Leghorns. They arrived all mixed in the same box. We stared at them and sorted and re-sorted for 30 minutes trying to separate the Welsummers from the Leghorns. At that age it is practically impossible. It was easy to narrow it to about ten. After that it was anybody's guess. Eventually, I just has to roll the dice. I also grabbed a Gold Laced Wyandotte. Now I just wait. Fingers crossed that they never develop that tell tale white ear of the Leghorn. Does anyone know at what age I can expect them to develop their white ear if they are Leghorns?

One week in and we are starting to see some feathering. The two birds in question are developing differently. One has longer feathers and the other has a little white on the ends of her shorter feathers. With the variation that one would expect in either breed I still don't see anything that would positively identify one or the other as Welsummer or Brown Leghorn. I could still have two of one or one of each.

Any thoughts?
